My students need picture books that will offer many perspectives on social emotional issues such as friendship, happiness, homelessness, diversity and inclusion, in a way that is primary grade appropriate.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are diverse in many aspects and enjoy learning in our International Baccalaureate school. They are special because they drive my instruction with their thought -provoking questions and are active leaders and members of our classroom community.
My goal is for them to thrive as much as they can while in 1st grade, so that their educational thirst for knowledge continues year after year.
This will foster a sense of global citizenship and internal motivation to learn, that is simply unmatched! My students realize they live in a diverse community where students go through many different life experiences. Learning about homeless, educational difficulties, and other difficult conversations helps our students realize the importance of social emotional learning.
Overall, They are such awesome globally responsive children and amazing learners within the great city of Chicago!
My Project
Students will explore an area of the classroom library that will allow for deep learning of social emotional ideas through picture books. For example, " Maddi's Fridge" will help students understand how their friends may feel if they face hunger or have been homeless. Other titles such as, "The Worst Day of My Life" and "Teamwork Isn't My Thing", will allow students to discuss ways to handle stress and work collaboratively.
The Five Social Emotional Competencies we will learn about throughout the school year are:
1.Identifying emotions
2.Accurate self-perception
3.Recognizing strengths
4.Self-confidence
5.Self-efficacy
Students will explore them all through these picture books!
Students at our International Baccalaureate (IB) School have goals of becoming global learners who are able to think globally and this thinking begins with understanding ourselves in order to better understand others, this project is essential to student's social development.
