Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Every student can learn just not on the same day or in the same way.” We teach in a Focus school with a diverse group of children.
Anyone looking into our first grade classrooms will see teachers and students who are engaged, productive, and happy to be there.
They will see teachers that use multiple resources to meet the needs of incredibly diverse students with varying background knowledge.
Many children come without life experiences that would help them to be more successful in school. We, as teachers, always look for opportunities to increase their experiences. By doing this, we open up the world to them.
My Project
I teach in a very diverse community and I believe it is incredibly important for students to see this diversity reflected in the literature available in the classroom. Many of the books in this project would increase the number of diverse read alouds available in my classroom.
I believe that using rich picture books for social emotional learning in the classroom is essential at this early elementary age.
Therefore, a majority of the books in this project showcase important learning for students including a growth mindset, empathy, patience, and understanding feelings. I want to use these picture books to teach my students the importance of kindness. The community in which my students live in is not always a kind environment and I believe it is my most important job to make sure my students understand the importance of being a genuinely kind person.
I have a deep love for picture books and I know this project will help my students fall in love with books as well. Books can open a new world for students and I can't wait to share this with them.
