This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a small school nestled in a neighborhood in Pennsylvania. The students attending my school are from an area marked by high poverty. They have had kindergarten and first grade to settle into the school routine. The time for achievement gaps to close is running low. It is imperative that they see school as a positive space that respects and supports them.
It is increasingly important that these students know each and every day that poverty does not define them.
They deserve the best classroom experience. They need access to resources that support their education.
My Project
For this project, I am asking for resources to help my students make gains in their social-emotional learning (SEL). The books that I have picked serve a dual purpose: promoting SEL and building language arts skills. These texts not only promote self-control, empathy, and friendship but also provide opportunities to learn reading and writing concepts.
Through these books, students will learn important concepts that will be charted on our sticky easel paper which can be displayed to make their learning "stick." Students benefit from being able to look back and reference concepts.
During lessons, we create anchor charts which show the highlights of a lesson. Being able to stick them to the wall allows us to preserve the learning. Anchor charts and high quality texts will increase the well-being and learning in my classroom.
