Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a bilingual school counselor in an urban setting. My students come to school with a variety of different life experiences. Some may have gone through adverse experiences that have impacted their sense of safety and/or well being and their ability to sustain attention in school to succeed. Others may experience academic struggles and have limited support from adults at home due to various factors.
As soon as they walk through our doors, they may have had a challenging morning already.
They may not have been able to eat a healthy breakfast, but they come to school where they can eat breakfast (many of our students qualify for free or reduced-price meals) before starting their school day and it's a safe, comfortable environment in which we care about their success as a whole child.
Every day that I work with our students I know that they have the potential to grow as learners and to develop strong social-emotional skills that will help them to problem solve, demonstrate empathy for others, regulate their emotions in healthy ways, challenge themselves to have a growth mindset and be kind and caring individuals of our community.
My Project
The materials in this project will greatly make a difference in our early childhood (K3-K5) students' social-emotional learning. They will be able to learn key concepts and skills related to social and emotional development. Students will be able to use materials such as the "Feelmo Speaking Cards" game and The Social Emotional Learning Kit Grades K-1 to learn feelings vocabulary. Furthermore, students will be able to connect the facial expressions on the visuals with naming/labeling emotions and noticing others emotions as well as their own. I will use the games with students, such as "Peaceable Kingdom Friends & Neighbors: The Helping Game" or Playing CBT, for hands-on practice to express their thoughts and feelings while also learning important social skills such as turn taking, waiting, listening, helping others and engaging in social play. The "I Know the Answer Game Buzzers" will be used to encourage students to participate in verbal communication and play games interactively with their peers in small groups. "The Build Me Emotions Duplo" kit will be especially helpful for the younger students when working in small groups to teach students feelings, sensations, coping skills and emotion regulation. "My Moods, My Choices Flipbook" will be beneficial for all kids, especially those who may have higher needs, such as students with difficulty with emotion regulation, self-control and/or have specific educational needs that require additional supports.
These materials will help students develop self-awareness, self-management, strengthen social awareness, and relationship skills.
The activities in this project will help my early childhood students to begin to understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These resources will be beneficial for students to learn healthy coping skills and responsible decision making. They will be able to describe and practice ways to manage strong emotions in healthy and safe ways.
