My students need to learn how to handle stressful situations and have tools that help them self-regulate. The writing desk will provide a quiet place within the classroom that students can use to calm down.
As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite those challenges, I am looking to make their time at school enjoyable and meaningful.
My students are energetic, enthusiastic, and eager to learn.
They like to move, they love reading, and require a lot of positive attention. Many students come from single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Many of our students start school already behind in development due to the lack of a stable and secure upbringing. When they enter my classroom I focus on the progress they can make here at school. I cannot change their home lives, however, I can certainly impact their experience during the school day. I hope to give them the security they need to thrive while at school and to overcome what happens while out of school.
The materials I am requesting will help teach my students how to be mindful which will help them self-regulate. My students struggle with controlling emotions, as they come from some very difficult situations and do not have a good grasp on how to handle the effects of the trauma they have experienced. In order to decompress when they are experiencing dysregulation, students need strategies and tools to support them with this process.
The writing desk will actually serve as a calm-down spot for my students.
It will provide them with a semi-private space, within the classroom, to use the strategies and tools of self-regulation. Students can not always leave the classroom and do not always need to leave the classroom when they become worked up. This special space will be a 'safe' place for students to visit when practicing self-regulation.
The other materials will serve as educational resources to help teach and promote self-regulation through practicing mindfulness in the classroom. This is a skill that students can carry with them into adulthood.
