I get the opportunity to work with some of the most wonderful, creative, and driven speech-language students at SES. What makes my students so special? No two are alike. My students have their own personalities with unique strengths and interests.
My students are a diverse group of learners with one or more disabilities that impact communication in the classroom.
My students have a wide range of disabilities including: Autism, Learning Disabilities, Speech Impairments, Fluency disorders, Language impairments, Social language deficits, and Other health impairments such as ADHD.
All of my students come to therapy to work on communicating more effectively, whether that be in the form of an Augmentative Communication device, pictures, words, or sentences. Some students need support thinking of the right words to say (vocabulary/semantics). Some need help understanding and using subtle social cues like reading facial expressions and knowing how to start a conversation (pragmatics). Some students struggle to pronounce their sounds correctly (articulation) or smoothly (fluency).
My Project
My speech and language students are a diverse group of learners with a diverse group of needs. My goal, as their Speech-Language Pathologist, is to teach them the social skills they need so they can be the most successful in class, at home, and with friends. Social, emotional, and behavioral skills are difficult concepts to grasp. Some of my students struggle with handling changes in their routines, some have trouble accepting corrective feedback, others have a hard time regulating and understanding their emotions.
These social-emotional books and hands-on games are the tools my students need to meet their social skill and behavioral goals.
These materials will help my students learn new social skills through board games. The hands- on games and therapy cards with prepare my students to carryover their best social skills into their general education classrooms and beyond.
