I am the school counselor at a public K-5 school in Tennessee. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing whole-class lessons for all of my students, as well as individual and small-group counseling sessions for my at-risk students.
My school's philosophy calls on us to educate the whole child; our school improvement plan goals include increasing students' emotional literacy.
My whole-class guidance lessons focus on a variety of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) skills that support their academic, personal/social, and career development, such as emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and perseverance, to name a few. My individual and small-group counseling sessions typically reinforce these skills with at-risk students who may struggle with their day-to-day application. This year as a school we are focusing on social-emotional learning, and I will be making extensive efforts to engage parents in their students' SEL skill-based instruction.
My Project
This year our school's focus is on students' social-emotional learning. As the school counselor, who is always SEL-focused, this is a great opportunity to enhance our school climate and, importantly, to engage our students' parents in their acquisition of SEL skills. Accordingly, the materials requested in this project promote engaging parents in students' social-emotional learning.
Two years ago I created a Social-Emotional Makerspace to further reinforce students' SEL instruction and to support my individual and small-group counseling sessions.
This space has a variety of hands-on activities designed to help students calm down and to create reminders of their proactive SEL skills that can be used as needed in their day-to-day lives. Among the offered activities are the creation of "reminder rocks" with positive messages that students can carry in their pockets or backpacks, or place in their desks.
The requested strainers are used in the process of tumbling reminder rocks (and discussing the importance of grit and perseverance, two important SEL skills). The finishing sprays are used when students paint messages on their reminder rocks (such as "Breathe," "Relax," or "Think It Through" that aid students in emotional regulation). The kindness cards provide ideas for positive reminder-rock messages or can be used as stand-alone reminders for students and parents.
This year I will sponsor several opportunities for parents to visit the SEL Makerspace as a way to promote their engagement in this aspect of their children's learning. Additionally, I will create parent newsletters that highlight the various skills we are discussing in class and ways for parents to practice and reinforce the SEL skills at home with their children. To create these newsletters, my two printers need the ink requested in this project. Last, the suckers will be a fun treat for my SEL Makerspace visitors!
