Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Students at our school are lifelong learners with a passion for academic success. As educators, we strive to develop independent critical thinkers motivated to pursue their dreams with a sense of global social responsibility. 94% of our students are students of color and 86% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. As a school counselor, I hope to provide Social Emotional Learning through the use of multicultural books that reflect the student population. I strongly believe in the importance of celebrating diversity and validating worldviews.

"Once children see themselves represented in books, their existence is validated, and they feel that they are part of the world."

-Eric Velasquez (award winning author and illustrator)

The books I have chosen will help me to teach Social Emotional Learning skills to my students, as well as share stories about characters that reflect and celebrate their diverse backgrounds and worldviews. Our school will begin the year with distance learning, but I will still be seeing students virtually for individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom guidance lessons. Some of the books I have chosen will be especially useful during the first few weeks of school as we introduce distance learning and emphasize the importance of wearing your face mask- A Little SPOT Learns Online: A Story About Virtual Classroom Expectations & A Little SPOT Wears A Mask.
