This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students suffer from anxiety, depression, ADHD, and/or trauma. Many of my students carry the baggage of emotions from home life trauma no child should have to endure, in addition to dealing with everyday teen drama and peer pressure. Many students want to know that someone loves them and actively listens. Many times during the day students are upset, they cry, they struggle to breathe, they are screaming on the inside, and they just want to be heard.
My students need a classroom where they can relax as well as achieve academically.
They need a classroom environment for mental health solitude.
My students attend an urban public school in Oklahoma that serves grades 9 to 12. A full 85% of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch. My students are lower middle class, and most are in single parent homes or live with grandparents.
My Project
My students need a classroom where they can learn in a destressing environment that is calming. Students can relax in comfortable seating as they read and do assignments with calming lights, soothing sounds, and relieving oils to decrease anxiety and/or panic attacks.
By creating a relaxing and calming environment, students can be more focused on schoolwork and be able to make better choices in behaviors.
Hopefully, this will increase student achievement in the classroom. Students will have a choice of flexible seating with the bean bag chairs, and those who are stressed from home and school will have a place to decompress and focus on academic achievement.
