This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My school hosts the district's self-contained program for students with autism. Due to COVID and distance learning, they have not had the opportunity to spend much time with neurotypical peers. A number of my students have shown considerable growth this year, and would benefit from some spending time in the general education classroom.

However, this transition can be difficult.

Some students are overwhelmed with by a new class with unfamiliar people, while others lack confidence in their academic abilities. Almost all of them have delays in communication as well. Some teachers are unfamiliar with inclusion, and while they want to be welcoming, they also are uncertain how to meet the needs of students with autism.

I want to support my students and my school, and the resources I have selected were chosen with this goal in mind. The social-emotional tools are for small, inclusive groups where self-contained students will participate alongside general education peer volunteers. This gives students with autism both the opportunity to learn communication and social skills, and to form friendships with other children who may become their general education classmates in the future.
