Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the 2020-2021 school year, I will be transitioning to a new school, a new grade level, and a set of new and exciting learners! Transitioning from primary grades (TK, K, 5th, 6th) to secondary (7th, 8th) will be quite the challenge. However, with this change, comes new demands for supports for students in the secondary grade level setting. The students, I'll be working with, are students that have mild to moderate disabilities in which they require additional supports in closing their SEL and academic gaps from their general ed peers.
My desire is to create a classroom environment where all students can feel safe, respected, and valued.
My new site will be in one of the toughest areas. The neighborhoods aren't safe, filled with drugs, gangs, and violence. However, students show up every day, ready to learn because they want to change the trajectory of their future. I want to be there alongside my students helping them achieve their goals. I want to provide a haven for my students where they can forget about the chaos around them, even for just a little while. Together, we can remove barriers and help lift our community!
My Project
Social Emotional Learning is a huge part of a student's life. They get these skills through personal experiences, self-reflection, at-home, through observing peers and adults, and also at school. Unfortunately, students are home for distance learning, and as a result, they are no longer accessing SEL skills that they would normally receive.
These kits will provide students with a variety of fun and engaging activities which addresses coping skills, emotion expression & management, kindness & positivity and tips for caregivers.
These kits will be used in our advisory class period to help address the emotional needs that students need, especially those moving into pre-teen years. My students have disabilities, IEPs and behavior plans. Having access to enriching tools to help them manage their emotions during times of uncertainties will help increase their overall learning and classroom engagement.
