Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are smart, funny, curious, energetic, and resilient. Many of our students come from low-income families in a mid-sized urban community. Many have also experienced trauma in their young lives. They like to be active and learn while being able to move. We have a high population of students with special education needs, as well as a large ELL population. Our city is proud to be known as welcoming to immigrants and refugee families, and as such, we have a richly diverse population for the smaller size of our city.
Our school district is introducing more trauma-informed practices, including Restorative Practices to all of our schools K-12.
My Project
As school counselors, my colleague and I are planning to teach a social-emotional curriculum called Beat the Odds, which incorporates the drumming circle as the forum for the lessons with 4th grade students. The evidence-based curriculum teaches social and emotional skills through school counselor and music teacher collaboration. The lessons are designed to be taught over an 8 week period of time.
The drumming lessons help teach skills including; focus, listening, team building, self-esteem, leadership, expression of feelings, anger and stress management, and empathy.
As our school district is focusing on utilizing more trauma-informed practices and restorative practices using circles, we thought this would be the perfect curriculum to address some of our students developmental needs.
