Help me give my students sensory activities, books and tools, such as sand tray supplies, to receive the social-emotional counseling they need and feel the support they deserve!
As a Social-Emotional Counselor for the entire school, I am privileged to work with all students within the K-12 charter school.
Each student brings a different background, home environment, personal history, goals and personality, but all are equally as important to reach out to and feel heard.
My students include kindergarteners learning social skills, making friends and understanding personal space. Students who exhibit difficulty following directions practice activities which require active listening. A number of students experience difficulty with impulse control and distractibility, so we use activities which require concentration to strengthen those skills. Many students benefit from improving their emotional intelligence, particularly because bullying is such an important topic to cover, so teaching about emotions and empathy are crucial components of education for everyone. Some students exhibit low motivation, so discussing self-esteem, self-confidence and courage to develop personal goals is important to help develop a sense of accomplishment. I provide students who feel angry, upset or stressed with a safe place to regulate their emotions. Still more students experience mental health issues which require additional support and understanding. It is extremely important to provide every student with tools necessary to be compassionate, forgiving, courageous and grateful for life.
My Project
As the Social-Emotional Counselor of a K-12 Charter School, I am provided the privilege of serving all the students of the school. Because students learn in all different ways, my goal is to provide a variety of counseling techniques to reach all the students.
Each item in the list was chosen to help student have their individual social-emotional needs met.
Sand tray allows children to express themselves without speaking, fidget toys provide children with sensory difficulties options to have needs met, paints serve as additional form of expression, and each of the books was chosen because they normalize topics for students including: anxiety, divorce, Impulse control and bullying. It is important to engage the students, to build rapport and develop safe and healthy relationships so that they can develop strong social-emotional intelligence, confidence, courage and compassion.
