Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach over 425 elementary students each week in P.E. More than 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch at our Title I school in the heart of Utah. The majority of our school time and funds are dedicated to academics.
However, when it's time for PE, our energetic students are ready to let loose and play all kinds of engaging and active games.
Unlike computer games, P.E. is live action with hands-on experience as students' hearts, hands and feet race to catch, throw, kick, trap and dribble.
My Project
During the pandemic, P.E. can be challenging since most sports involve multiple touches on equipment and close contact. Yet, being active is essential to a long term health.
However, students can be safer in PE if they do not share equipment and are socially distanced.
Six soccer nets would be strategically placed then used for small group "no hands" soccer and hockey games that keep students active yet socially distanced. Also included are 36 catch/throw sticks and balls. Students use a throwing arm to throw and catch a ball. Each student only touches their own throwing arm and not the ball. Then the individual throwing arms are easily sanitized for the next P.E. class. Two launchers will be used with existing equipment and allow for sanitizing between use. Finally, there is gym tape so that the gym floor can be marked and students can social distance to remain safe.
