Social Cartoons Help Students with Autism Connect in Middle School

Help me give my students The Fellowes Ayla 125 Paper Laminator with Pouch Starter Kit so we can create social cartoons that allow students with autism to connect with peers by showing them their visual strengths.

My Students

I am the Speech and Language Therapist for Middle School students who are communicatively impaired. All of my students work so very hard to fit in, socially connect and do well in school. Middle school is hard enough, but having a communication deficit on top of fitting in, is really tough. Many of my students love to cartoon, which I utilize as a tool for them to work on their social skills. Sharing their cool visual skills with peers and teachers, allows socially challenged students to shine.

My Project

My communicatively impaired students will learn about social language skills; how to connect with peers and teachers, by using cartooning as a tool. They will explain to their school communities how visual drawings can facilitate communication. This is a great opportunity for the communicatively challenged students to showcase their visual skills and explain how autism impacts social connections.

The laminator will help us finish our social cartoons so our students with autism can share cartoons with peers, teachers, custodians, librarians and office staff.

The books will be used as resources for students, teachers and parents to understand the social language world.
