My students need a new book display unit and 45 new book titles they can check out that focus on emotional and social issues. Our school library has very few of these type of books to check out.
The goal of my project is to provide both students and parents resources they can check out on both social and emotional topics.
Students today face many challenges: divorce, homelessness, foster care, grief, and bullying just to name a few. Books on these topics are a must for students to cope.
Students at my school are very diverse.
There are over 900 students and 60% are on free or reduced lunch. 1/3 of the students at this school are military children. Many children are Spanish speaking and just now beginning to learn the English language.
We serve students from preK all the way to 8th grade. Our school became designated as as a school of innovation in 2011. The school believes that all students should be exposed to a variety of academic and career possibilities, hobbies, and vocational interests through a 21st Century learning environment.
My Project
Young people today face a variety of challenges that affect their ability to learn. The resources I have requested will fill a big need for books on social and emotional topics. The books will help equip my students to recognize and manage emotions and handle challenging situations effectively.
I want to provide a library of books for checkout for students and parents alike. As a school only 3 years old, our school library collection of books on social emotional topics is very small. I also will be able to use these materials school wide during my classroom guidance lessons and also during small group counseling sessions.
Today's students face such incredible struggles (divorce, grief, bullying, academic pressures, terrorism, school shootings, parental substance abuse, foster care children, sexual and physical abuse, homelessness and so many more) that if we want our future generation to grow up mentally and emotionally strong, we must provide the resources to help them build resiliency toward these traumas they have endured.
