My students need standing desks and flexible seating options, as well as sensory items that can help with the deescalation and processing of behaviors.
We serve students in an urban school setting in Green Bay, WI. We serve a student body of approximately 1200 students. Over 70% of these students qualify for free or reduced lunch and about 20% of our population is being served under the special education umbrella. Within our special education group, we have students who struggle with social-emotional and sensory regulation.
Through this project we hope to create a safe space where teachers and students can collaborate and grow, process events going on their in their daily lives, and regain the confidence to be successful in the classroom setting.
This room will serve multiple purposes; which include, but are not limited to:
1. a space for students who are in crisis and have immediate needs
2.lessons for students who are working on identifying and regulating emotions
3. lessons for students who need school, community and work related "soft skills"
My Project
Our high school is dedicated to supporting our students social and emotional health. By having a comfortable, safe, and warm space which includes a rug, flexible seating and minimal stimulation, our students will have the opportunity to learn and grow in their ability to manage emotions, tolerate adversity and cultivate meaningful and healthy relationships.
Creating a space with soft lighting utilizing light filters and floor lamps instead of florescent lights reduces headaches, eye strain and distractions from flickering light for students with autism or others who have light sensitivity.
In this dedicated space, students will have flexible seating such as a rug for floor seating, standing desks, balance ball chairs and "wiggle seats" to help them to be able to produce their best work. Teachers will have access to a variety of fidget tools such as sensory putty, "tangles" and other tactile items and social skill building curriculum aimed at helping students process sensory and social/emotional needs.
Certain items in the room, such as the trampoline, will allow for movement breaks and the ability to exert extra energy in a safe manner. Noise canceling headphones will be accessible to students who have reached their capacity to process noises in their environment and need a more manageable way to refocus. A CD player will allow us to play calming music or background noise during mindfulness activities.
