My students need social and emotional learning curriculum guides, and the corresponding literature connection texts, including twenty three nonfiction and fiction books.
Our classroom is an open and inviting environment designed to foster independent student learning. My students are thirsty for new materials to continue their education.
I teach in a public urban multi-age Montessori school with fifty-five first through fifth-grade students.
My students learn through small group and individual lessons, research and inquiry, and by going out into our community. My students come from all different backgrounds racially and socioeconomically and live in an urban setting. My co-teacher and I are piloting a combined Montessori 1st-6th grade classroom.
My students are involved in social justice and environmental conscious movements taking a stand and trying to better the world. Our students work hard with the resources they have to follow their passions and find meaning in their education.
My Project
Social and emotional learning can be very difficult in the elementary classroom. Our students need support and guidance to navigate the social waters of this time of great change.
This project will help students to explore brain-based strategies for social emotional growth through literature.
This project is based around The MindUp Curriculum: Brain Based Strategies for Learning- and Living. Through this curriculum students learn to be more focused, build mindfulness, and develop resiliency. This curriculum uses different examples from both nonfiction and literature as talking points for students to engage in meaningful conversations and role play different ways to handle situations.
This project includes both the curriculum itself and the individual books that are used for read alouds and lessons. There are four copies of most of the texts as they will be used by four elementary classrooms.
