Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“I see curriculum as a metaphor for the lives we want to live and the people we want to be.” - Jerome C. Harste (Primary Voices K-6, 1990)
My students, the class of 2019, are a random sampling of ~150 9th grade students on my campus.
This is the first group of students who will formally take an SEL class. The SEL initiative is a way of seeing all students through a growth mindset. SEL courses have been dedicated to the deep study and exploration of the human condition in order to help our students name and grow their social and emotional capacities. Our campus administrators are in full support of this course and the greater movement towards restorative discipline, investing in the sacred time and space our students deserve to achieve their highest visions of and for themselves.
My Project
The selected texts are ones that will promote critical discussion about important and difficult topics that students may face as they develop and grow. These texts will be read together as a class, as read alouds, in groups, and sometimes individually. SEL standards, adopted from CASEL (http://www.casel.org), will be strategically addressed throughout the reading of the texts. Focused discussions, debates, and role playing will be inspired by our unifying texts.
The movement towards SEL on my campus is founded upon the belief that all students come to our classrooms with a wealth of knowledge and life experience.
These selected texts will support instruction and focused inquiry into 6 strands of SEL intelligences: Self- Awareness, Self-Respect, Social Awareness, Relationships with Others, Understanding Community, and Leading and Forming Community.
