My students need backpacks to carry their gear to and from the practice field and to games. We are also requesting a set of soccer disc cones and pinnies because ours are in disrepair.
Our students come from all over the world, their families seeking a better life or freedom from prejudice. We have a large refugee population as well as many students from poverty.
They amaze me with their resilience and belief in the possibility of tomorrow.
We are exercising our brains as well as our bodies through soccer. Soccer is a pathway for all our students to be healthier and have a place on a team. Our teams support students through academic help as well as teaching them discipline, respect, and self-motivation.
We travel every day to practice as we do not have facilities for soccer. This added time is used to check in with students on their academics and emotional needs. Our coaches are also caregivers.
My Project
Our student-athletes are growing their muscles along with their minds. The soccer team is not simply an athletic team but an academic intervention for our high needs students. Being on the team ensures you have multiple adults helping you after school and checking in with your academics and emotional status. Having some new equipment (balls, pinnies, disc cones, and string backpacks) can help our kids feel pride in what they are doing and practice responsibility for theirs and the team's possessions.
For some of our girl team members, this is their first sports team and we are trying to build their confidence along with academics.
Our girls often come from homes that don't always support women; we are that voice in their heads saying "You can do it, I believe in you."
The backpacks especially would be helpful for students to carry homework as well as their athletic gear to and from the practice fields. This allows them time to do homework and check in with coaches while they travel on the buses for 15-40 minutes.
