My students need STEM bins in order to creatively have a hands-on approach to learning. This will allow them to solve problems by using critical thinking skills.
I will be teaching first grade for the first time this upcoming school year to some wonderful and enthusiastic students. I have worked with some of them in after school clubs before, but in a small group. First graders are like sponges and absorb everything you teach them. I love how energetic they are when you present new activities to them. Their eyes light up and their smile gets bigger and bigger, and you know you've made a connection.
Future teachers, nurses, doctors, and leaders are in my classroom.
Our school is located in the heart of rural Appalachia in South Eastern Kentucky. Many students are in the backpack food program and 100% of our school receive free lunch. Being from a low socioeconomic background and area, doesn't stop them from learning, it just takes place a little differently. Working in small groups allow students to work on tasks on their own individual level and be successful.
My Project
Our school mascot is an eagle. A mighty eagle, and just like those eagles that soar high above the others, my students deserve to be able to soar high also.
STEM bins will provide the opportunity for my students to not only learn, but creatively express themselves while engaging in fun, hands-on activities.
These activities provide numerous socialization skills as well, which is important in a child's development.
I've taught for many years, but this is my first year teaching first grade and this would benefit my students greatly. They are energetic and always ready to learn. I can't wait for them to use these!
