My students need hands on and engaging sight word activities to learn how to be successful readers.

My kindergarten students are incredible in every way. Kindergarten is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or hold a pencil. Our students attend an inner-city public school where approximately 90% live below the poverty line. We spend a lot of time doing hands-on learning.
All of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch and participate in the backpack program on the weekends.
This does not stop our students from coming to school and showing their love for learning. We love to explore everything around us, both inside and outside of the classroom. We love to show what we know and learn in a hands-on way.
Sight words and decoding of words are an important life long skill that students need in order to become successful readers. Learning to read can be a challenging, but rewarding experience for kindergartens. Memorizing and learning basic sight words is key for young readers because basic sight words, such as the, it, is, a, can, and came, along with hundreds of other words, are the words that are most commonly found in printed text. By students being able to quickly decode basic sight words their fluency and ability to comprehend the message the author is portraying is greatly increased.
Sight word learning needs to be a fun, engaging, and a hands on adventure.
The Sight-Word Steps are a great way to get my students actively moving while having fun as they learn textual sight words. The Sight-Word Steps will be used weekly as part of my morning circle activities. The Search and Find Sight-Word Bags will allow for my tactile learners to explore sight words using touch. These Sight-Word Bags will be added to my daily writing center so that students can write the words as they locate them in the bags. The Learning Sight-Words Activity Chest will also be placed in my daily writing center. This Sight-Word Activity Chest will allow for students to practice sight words in a variety of hands on ways, such as finding a specific sight word, building a specific sight word, locating the specific sight word among all sight words, and lastly students will practice writing the sight word. I can't wait for my students to begin exploring sight words and to become successful readers.
