Stephen Shore quoted “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism”. Our students amaze us every day. Each child at our school possesses a unique learning style, requiring individualized supports and intervention techniques to foster their growth and development. Whether it takes a day, weeks, or even the whole school year to achieve their goals, our students work hard every day and no achievement goes unnoticed.
When we witness a child use a new skill spontaneously or experience their elation at being able to access new areas of their school environment we are reminded that learning is not limited by one's disability.
Our school is expanding to service the needs of the special education population in the community. The new school site is comprised of 8 classrooms of kindergarten students ready to start their educational journey! New beginnings, however, do not always come with all the therapy equipment and materials long-standing schools have accumulated. Our occupational and physical therapy department desperately needs the tools necessary to help these young children continue to build their bodies and learn new skills that will help them to be successful throughout the school environment. These therapy materials will have a huge impact on the progress made this school year!
Sensory processing, physical strength, and endurance are vital components of a young student's ability to participate in school-related activities.
Many of our students struggle to keep up and advance in these areas and require therapeutic services to promote the acquisition of important skills or to utilize compensatory strategies. Equipment such as mats, balls, balance beams, balance boards, stepping stones, and weights can be used in activities both to build strength and coordination and to provide heavy work activities that can help children regulate to become calmer or more focused. Body socks, enclosed tents, and sensory crash pads permit students to gain valuable sensory input to help calm and organize their sensory systems and allow for enhanced engagement in their classrooms.
