Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Langston Hughes said, "Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly." My students understand that dreaming and excelling in school is their key to soaring to new heights, no matter where they come from.

Picture a classroom filled with twenty-nine students who are eager to learn, but there are not enough math manipulatives to go around to teach a math concept, or students with a running nose, but no Kleenex to clean their noses.

This is a preview of my classroom. The school's enrollment is approximately seven hundred four students. The racial makeup is about eighty-nine percent African American, five percent Asian, five percent Hispanic, and one percent Caucasian. In my classroom I have twenty seven African American students, one Hispanic student, and one Asian student, who are all from low socio-economic households. However, their social status has no barring on how they learn as long as they have the necessary resources/basic supplies to help them achieve.

My Project

Imagine a child's eyes lighting up after they have been struggling with a math skill for several days and then finally being able to demonstrate and explain to the teacher that they comprehend. Hearing my students say, "I got it," really makes my day. The measuring school smart kit/measurement poster will allow my students to demonstrate and explain what they have learned about measurement during small group instruction. These items will provide hands on and a visual(poster) to help my students develop their understanding of number sense. My students' measurement abilities will increase significantly by having more measurement manipulatives. The math center book will expose students to various math centers and also assist in creating hands on and educational centers to benefit their learning. During the winter months, the students are susceptible to colds. Having hand sanitizer and kleenex will help keep down on the spread of germs inside the classroom

This project will have a great impact on my students' problem-solving/measurement skills by providing manipulatives that will give them real life experiences.

My students are very excited about learning and will be very appreciative to have instructional items that will make learning easy and fun for them.
