Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a low-income neighborhood in East San Jose where 60% of our student population consists of English Learners. The majority of this 60% are students whose first language is Spanish. My students are always hungry to learn and want to get their noses in as many books as possible.
Having access to a diverse set of books in their classroom library is a crucial first step in helping all of my students learn more about the world around them.
My Project
We will be starting a new English Language Arts curriculum this year that will allow my students to not only have access to a plethora of texts, but will give them many opportunities to read and discuss books. However, all of my books are currently only in English. My mission is to ensure that my library is diverse and culturally responsive.
My first step in meeting that goal is making sure I am giving my English Learners access to books in Spanish.
I want to make sure that I am giving all of my students the same opportunities to read and discuss texts so that they can develop a love of reading.
