I am a first-year teacher at a Title I school where a majority of the students who are enrolled receive free or reduced-price lunch. A high percentage of the students come from low-income housing around the area.
Even with the difficult situations that some of these students have faced at such a young age, they still come to school with spirit.
There are a variety of backgrounds and personalities, but the students all have one thing in common: they come to school excited and ready to learn!
My Project
In order for children to be successful in reading they not only need to be read to, but they also need to practice reading books that are on their level.
Giving my students a classroom library of leveled texts will allow them to practice the skills that they are learning each day.
Currently in my classroom, my class library is full of books that are beyond the reading level of my students. With these books the students get to create their own words by looking at the pictures, but it doesn't allow them to use the explicit reading strategies that I teach them each day. With your help I can provide my students with a library full of "just right" books arranged in storage caddies so they can soar through reading and become ready for first grade.
