Help me give my students a chance to learn by reading. Most of my students will never leave their neighborhoods and these books will give them a chance to take field trips through books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the greatest job in the world! I teach young minds! Every year my students enter my classroom excited and ready to learn. My students come to the table with a plethora of different backgrounds and experiences. The hardest part of my job is knowing what my students have gone through in the small amount of time they have been on this earth. No matter what the circumstance, when they enter my class we are all on a level playing field. We are family and support each other in every way possible.
Many of my students struggle with their home lives and are in survival mode and quite possibly will never experience the life that you and I are so blessed to experience.
That is how I hook them with reading.
We read every day and they get to experience so much through our reading time. I explain on a daily basis that in order to succeed you must know how to read. Books are plane, train, car, or bicycle. Books take you everywhere and bring the experience to you on every page, whether it is fiction or non fiction, books instill the knowledge my students need to succeed.
My Project
I teach at a Title I school in which 99 percent of our students are on free and reduced lunches. Our community is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. My students have limited resources and most are living with their grandparents. When they come to school they are eager to learn. I have students who are on many different levels of reading that can range anywhere from pre-k through fifth grade. Non-fiction books tend to be harder for them to understand due to the Lexile and the upper level vocabulary. I want my students to learn to love both fiction and non-fiction books.
My students need to be immersed in literacy on a daily basis, especially non-fiction.
They have limited schema and vocabulary. Most have never traveled out of their neighborhoods. It warms my heart when I see them develop a love of reading through delving into these nonfiction reading experiences. A world they have never known existed.
Having this library in my classroom will enable my students to take field trips through the books they read.
