Help me give my students pencils and summer educational activity books to maintain their current level of success, review skills and strategies to prevent the Summer Slide!
I teach 17 wonderful second graders. Each day when my students walk into our building they are greeted by our school family. They feel a warm, caring environment from the moment they walk in the building until they leave. We are a public Title I elementary school located in an urban neighborhood in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and include many English language learners. Our campus has a very high level of economically disadvantaged elementary school students. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and some students take home a backpack of food for the weekend.
My Project
The “Summer Slide” is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. When I started this school year many of my second graders were 1 to 2 years behind in all subject areas. We have made tremendous growth this year as most are now at or above grade level. Since we are now dealing with being out of school for some time due to Coronavirus these summer workbooks to keep on top of their skills are more important than ever.
I have found that many of my students do not have basic school supplies, books or school workbooks at their homes.
Students need access to books. This is especially true over the summer weeks. If students do not read, they will "slide back" in their reading and math skills due to lack of practice.
My students have worked so hard all year long I want to reward each student with a summer workbook and pencils that will focus on skills they need to practice during our summer break. The summer bridge activity books for each student will help prevent the 'summer slide' by providing a structured routine of review for each day during the summer break. These materials will allow my students to work with parents/guardians to review daily reading skills and strategies during the summer. My students will stay inquisitive and eager to maintain their current level of success through your kind donation to my DonorsChoose project.
