Soaring into Science with Butterflies

My students need 1 butterfly nursery, 1 coupon for extra caterpillars, 1 life cycle sequencing kit, and an insect specimen center.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Budding young first grade entomologists will marvel at the magic of metamorphosis. These impressionable students will witness the life cycle of butterflies before their very own eyes!!

My class consists of high energy, curious first grade students from various cultural backgrounds.

At least half of my students speak another language at home. We are a Title 1 school with most of my students receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of the children reside in apartment buildings which have very limited garden areas, so they do not have a chance to observe and interact with nature including butterflies and bugs. Many experiences they have are from watching science programs on television rather than having hands-on experiences.

My Project

A butterfly nursery, 1 coupon for extra caterpillars, 1 life cycle sequencing kits, and 1 insect specimen center will bring real life science into our classroom. Imagine the delight on their faces when they see the larvae munching and crunching the "goo" each day growing bigger and bigger like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In our science journals, we will record our observations, anxiously awaiting the big day when they spin their chrysalis. What a mystery! What happens inside there? On the day the butterflies hatch, we will have a special birthday celebration!! After further observations, we just have to see that long tongue sipping up the nectar! They will be released into our garden...but not before the class has studied what kinds of plants they prefer.

This fascinating unit will increase much needed vocabulary, enhance observational skills, improve writing skills but most importantly allow the students to gain some real hands-on science.

I also hope it will create memories that will last for many years to come. Butterflies are such delicate and beautiful creatures. Our class will learn to respect nature as their curiosity is stimulated and, like the butterflies, they soar into the world of science.
