Help me give my students a subscription of Scholastic News so that each student can have a magazine to read and study at school and then take home to read again.
I teach one of six sections of third grade in our K-4, Title 1 school; over half of our students come from low- households. Located in north central Minnesota, we have a large, fairly diverse school with 587 students (68% White, 26% Native American, and 6% other.)
My students are amazing.
They are curious about the world and creative. Their eyes sparkle when I bring the globe out during guided reading to give background to a story. They are full of questions! Many of my students do not have access to the Internet at home. Many do not even have books at home. We are fortunate to have a good school library, but access to magazines is very limited. Scholastic News is a quality magazine that can bring the world to my students--many of whom have never traveled more than 60 miles away. Scholastic News will engage them with current news and issues at their reading level.
My Project
Scholastic News is a magazine that brings current events, both in our nation and throughout the world, to children in a way and at a reading level that they can understand. My students love maps and studying the globe, and this magazine will bring information about a great big world to them, every week. They will be excited to bring it home and share it with their families once we have finished using it at school. The maps and graphs will enhance the stories, and help all learners grasp the information.
I love the way Scholastic News incorporates charts and graphs into their content.
Both the articles and the non-text features create inter-disciplinary connections that strengthen my students' understanding of math, science, and social studies. Scholastic News will make an amazing difference in my students learning because the information contained in it interests them, and they will want to read it. Readers who are engaged, read. Those who read, learn. My students will improve their reading because they will be fascinated by the articles in this magazine and spend more time reading.
