Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what reading class was like in middle school? Was it extremely interesting to where you didn't want to leave, or was it extremely boring to where your friend had to drag you to class? My hope is that my students race to class to grab a front row seat with their favorite NEW book!
My students are a diverse population of 6th grade students from mostly African-American and Hispanic backgrounds.
They attend a high poverty middle school in North Carolina. Many of them live in single-parent and/or low income homes with parents who work two jobs, or with grandparents or other family members. Unfortunately, books are not at the top of the shopping list in their homes, nor on the top of the list in our school. However, in order to excel in this ever-changing society, students desperately need books.
My Project
My students need books that are on or above grade level in order to grow as readers and continue to grow into respectful citizens in today's society. With these books, students will be able to read current and classic fiction and nonfiction books that are interesting as well as challenging. These books will be used during their independent reading time in class. Students will learn that they can succeed when they READ!
One of my goals this year is to reach and challenge students who always excel and to push their growth.
Students often drop their reading interest when coming to middle school. With this project, the intent is to motivate students to become lifelong readers.
