Our school is located in south Louisiana and was one of the hardest hit areas from hurricanes Gustav and Ike. I teach in an inner city school where most of the students are at or near the poverty line. Since the downfall of the economy, the high price in gas, and the expenses parents have incurred since the storms, there is very little money floating around our campus. We house students from Pre-K to sixth grade and have around 1,000 students.
I am part of the PBS {Positive Behavior Support} committee that has been mandated by the state. Each school however, must fund its own program.
At our school we have a S.O.A.R.{Safety, Ownership, Achievement , Respect}Store where students that exhibit these qualities may purchase items that they have earned. Tickets are given to each student that shows SOAR behavior. The obstacle we face is that we have exhausted what little funds we had.
In order to supply our store, we need the help of someone. Our students acting out behaviors because of their poor home life is affecting their education dramatically. We can’t do it alone. I beg you to seriously consider my proposal. Our Soar Store is a valuable asset to our school and we are seeing progress in student behavior because of it.
We need reward pencils, note pads, note books, erasers, folders, drawing pads, gel pens, markers, color pencils Sets, manual pencil sharpeners, sketch books, mechanical pencils, eraser sticks, and a large amount of candy treats.
Please - consider my proposal as a desperate plea for help. Our children are definitely worth your consideration. They have so little and we, as educators, want to give them so much more. We want to give them the education they so desperately need. They don't understand this now, but you and I know how important it is to their future.
Many thanks for any help you can give!
