Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our wonderful school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My junior high students are polite, well-mannered, hard-working students who come from good homes. Many of my students are diverse learners with ADHD, learning disabilities or cognitive delays; many come from another country or are first-generation Americans. They all face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom eager to learn and do their best every day. These students are extremely diverse in terms of academic ability. This diversity is great, but as a teacher, it can be a challenge to reach all my students when they are at different levels academically.
My goal is to make sure that all students, regardless of where they are academically, have all the tools they need to be successful and become lifelong learners.
Each and everyone of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel in school and in life.
My Project
Drone programs help students develop critical thinking, problem solving skills, and computational thinking. I want to encourage interest in skills such as coding and robotics.
I want to provide students with an opportunity to participate in engaging STEM related activities.
We were recently given five drones to research and put together. It took my fifth and sixth graders several weeks to put them together and figure out how to control the drones. They worked so diligently to assemble the million pieces and tiny screws for each one. They researched drones and their uses. The excitement in our room was contagious. Everyday they would ask if today was THE day! Sadly, we went out to fly them last week and only one drone flew. My students have used their critical thinking skills and problems solving to try to fix them but to no avail. Students have taken them home and had their parents help rebuild them but they are still not working. We were all so disappointed that our "Drone Day" was an epic fail. My students face challenges in and out of the classroom everyday. They are not quitters and they do their best everyday. I would like to give them the opportunity to try again by getting four brand new drones. This will allow them the chance to experience success and soar to new learning with drones.
