Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if the only way to learn was through using pictures or objects? Some children on the autism spectrum think, learn, and organize information this way.
The majority of my truly amazing students are diagnosed with autism and also face the challenges of coming from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background.
They have a wide range of abilities in their social, cognitive, and language skills and need certain modifications to ensure that they have a balanced instructional program with functional and academic rigor.
Planning and teaching social skills to over 50 students across 8 classes with varying abilities, has its challenges. Motivation is a critical component to engage my students in learning. Having access to a variety of critical high interest materials will enable them to actively participate, generalize skills and reach their full social emotional learning potential.
My Project
WonderGrove SOAR (Social Skills, Organization, Adapted Behaviors, and Resources) is a Social Skills program that includes over 200 short animations and 2,000 extension lessons that can be used online to instruct my students during distance learning. All the materials are align to Common Core Standards for K-2 students and offers 3 different levels of difficulty that will meet the needs of my diverse learners.
The WonderGrove SOAR for Special Education Classrooms program offers a multitude of fun and engaging lessons that will help make distance learning about social and life skills a more optimal experience.
The lessons cover topics such as paying attention, following rules, covering your mouth, washing your hands, cleaning up, using polite words and visiting the doctor. These skills are modeled to students through easy to follow, short animated stories with Chris, Maria, Peter, Dee and Marcus, five relatable characters. The videos also contain Symbol Stix image supports. The additional layer of support will provide my non-verbal students with full access since Symbol Stix images are already used on many of their AAC devices. Each topic has a ready made lesson plan and include extension lessons that can be further differentiated if necessary.
Just WONDER how far my students could potentially S.O.A.R. if given the chance to explore a GROVE full of school readiness, social emotional learning, life and safety skill lessons.
