My students need wheels, axles and lazy Susan bearings for the six soapbox derby cars we are building for our end of the year engineering design challenge. We are competing against the other 5th grade classes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and they all receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. None of them have access to a computer at home. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The 5th graders at our school in Nevada are competing in a Soapbox Derby Design Challenge. The soap box derby cars each need 1 lazy Susan bearing for steering, 2 axles and 4 wheels with good bearings.
Ever since the TESLA plant became a reality, here in Nevada, I have consistently reminded my students that Elon Musk is going to be looking for the best mathematicians and engineers.
Many of my kids believe that they can design cars when they grow up. In fact, when we decided on this project, they were so excited to begin designing cars right now!
Our cars are going to be designed to efficiently slice through the air cruising to victory.
