My students need copies of January's Sparrow, Just in Time, Abraham Lincoln, For the Love of Autumn, Fiona's Lace, Bully, Goin' Someplace Special, All the Places to Love, The Memory String, Ginger and Petunia, Emma Kate, Betty Doll, A Picture of Freedom, and I Can Hear the Sun.
During an average three hour literacy block my students use multiple read alouds for every aspect of our instruction. Instead of using a boring old basal my students learn through meaningful read alouds that we tie in to our reading, writing and language standards.
Our school has students who come from low socio-economic backgrounds and 95% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
Our school system has cut funding each year for the past nine years.
Although we have a library, all reading and language teachers must share the limited resources we have amongst ourselves. This is challenging because one text can tie in with multiple standards, requiring the teacher to need it in her possession for weeks even months at times. With limited resources already, this can be a challenge. Since funding has been cut, we have certainly seen this challenge increase. These read alouds are so crucial to these children, not only for their use in teaching standards, but also to encourage these children to love reading. Most children have never been out of the city limits and these read alouds are often the only window they have to seeing the big world outside our town.
My Project
This project requests classroom copies of January's Sparrow, Just in Time, Abraham Lincoln, For the Love of Autumn, Fiona's Lace, Bully, Goin' Someplace Special, All the Places to Love, The memory String Ginger and Petunia, Emma Kate, Betty Doll, A Picture of Freedom, and I Can Hear the Sun.
If these books are purchased for my classroom they will be loved and engaged with on a daily basis, multiple times a day. Students will learn how to infer, predict, understand point of view, see character change, comprehend, experience problem and solution, dissect writer's craft and enjoy rich descriptive texts that paint a picture they would otherwise not have access to without them. Students will practice reading to each other, learning how to use the expression and intonation in their voice to make the characters come alive. New vocabulary will be cherished and internalized. Students will be carried away to other places and learn about the lives of different people with the beautifully written and illustrated read alouds. Lessons on character will be taught, then learned and internalized as students also learn to empathize with characters in the story. They will then apply these life lessons and skills in their own lives.
This gift will increase fluency, knowledge and life experience.
We will have our own classroom copies of books that will not have to be shared. This will give my students time to savor each book. They will be able to read over and over again, becoming fluent and expressive readers. They will comprehend the text while finding a deeper understanding of character motivation. They will be able to soak in the illustrations and appreciate what they add to the text. Students will become book connoisseurs!
