Our students want to change the world. They aspire to be pharmacists, astrophysicists, nurses, FBI agents, scientists, aerospace engineers, and surgeons who want to attend West Point, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, LSU, NCSU, and SUNY just to name a few. Their math levels range from kindergarten to college level. We have students who are entering public school for the first time and students who have been in school since they were two.
We created a new STEM-Focused Magnet Middle School last year and are in need of math manipulates for our students to use.
We are the first school of its kind in our low-income, rural area of the Appalachian Mountains.
My Project
My students will use the tiles and snap cubes to see and understand math in a concrete way. As they move along the continuum from concrete to abstract, they will begin using the dry-erase boards to solve and graph inequalities and equations. To increase their math fluency and automaticity they will play "I Have...Who Has". To increase their strategic thinking skills, there will be "Equate: The Equation Thinking" tournaments.
By funding this project, you will assist my present and future students in building their math skills as they move from a concrete to abstract knowledge of math, and as they increase their fluency, automaticity and strategic thinking skills.
