This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach an advanced (or "gifted") first grade class in a public school in the South Bronx. I love my students to death and I set extremely high expectations for them. When they see high expectations, they reach them. Most of my first grade students are reading on third grade levels, some are reading higher. These students have all the support in the world from the school and from their parents, but they do not necessarily have the funds to buy appropriate books. If I am to keep pushing these students, they need appropriate books on their reading level that they can relate to.
I would like books that deal with multicultural issues and guided reading books at higher levels than the normal first grade books. The students are getting bored with the lower level books in the classroom. When something is challenging for you, you put more effort into it: you try harder. Same thing goes for these kids. They should not be bored with school when they are only six years old just because their books are too easy for them!
I want to keep encouraging, challenging and pushing them to reach even greater levels. I have bought many books for my students already, but there are 19 of them and I am only one person. There is no doubt in my mind that with continued encouragement and proper learning materials, all 19 of my students will reach WHATEVER they set out to reach in life. Please be part of this miracle.
