I teach 3-5 year olds in an Early Childhood Special Education classroom. These children have a huge list of strengths but also have a wide variety of difficulties that they work very hard on. Some students have speech delays and others have developmental physical or cognitive delays.
Our goal is to get all children ready for preschool or kindergarten with their typically developing peers.
These kiddos work extremely hard and give nothing but their best. They all possess the power to overcome physical differences, the power to persevere when learning is challenging, and the power to teach others that it is okay to be different. I am so fortunate to work with these little learners everyday.
My Project
By providing students with a classroom pet, we are giving them the opportunity for a wide variety of experiences and learning. Classroom pets allow students to observe, form questions, learn and what living things need to survive. But the learning doesn't end there!
By providing a large, safe, tank for fish, students will be able to learn responsibility and respect for life.
Students will also learn valuable math concepts, for example, "Where is the smallest fish?" Research shows that classroom pets can also provide emotional support for students. A fish tank in the classroom would also be a wonderful sensory experience that many students in my classroom seek out.
