Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is in a high poverty area. Most of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. I see my students wanting to succeed but the odds are stacked against them. They have limited opportunities for exposure to good books, technology, the arts, performances, museums and other enrichment activities because their families can't afford them. I feel very passionate about giving them equal opportunities for access to education. Part of my job is to find ways to foster and develop a love for learning that will uplift them throughout their lives. As a teacher, with sixteen years of experience under my belt, I have learned that my students need many interventions. But above all, they need to fall in love with learning during their primary years. That is why I feel the urgency to find ways to enrich my classroom and fulfill my students' needs.
My Project
When I was young I didn't have many resources but I had the opportunity to attend a public music school. Even though I didn't choose music as my profession, learning piano and singing opened many doors for me. I was able to attend college on a scholarship when I was accepted as a member in the university choir. Funding for art and music education in underserved communities is limited or non existent. Despite that unfortunate fact, the research indicates that my low income students can gain substantial long term skills through music education. That is why I think is important for me to step up and share what I know integrating music in my teaching.
I want my students to be part of a choir so they can learn music and voice fundamentals, experience camaraderie and develop confidence while performing.
Having a portable piano keyboard is essential to learn music and vocalize a choir. The maracas will help me teach my students rhythm and the students will use the binders to keep their sheet music and look professional when performing. I would like my students to learn that music can open many doors as it did for me. Help them discover that singing in a choir can give them pride, joy and so much more!
