Hooray! This project is fully funded

After one year of teaching in the South Bronx, I have been able to identify many needs that my students have. If I could, I would request the moon and stars for these kids, but the confines of reality will only allow so much. At this time the resources I am most wishing for are children's dictionaries and thesauri. All of my students are in Special Education and have an Individual Education Plan. They are all in the seventh grade; however, most are reading on a fifth grade level. A few are sadly only barely reading at a first grade level and no student is reading on a level that they should be. I discovered the power of word study this past year, and how much my students are (surprisingly) engaged by going to a dictionary/thesaurus and finding new words to use. I felt that my students would have been able to gain more if they had dictionaries and thesauri that were more accessible to their level of functioning. The one dictionary that I had, my own personal one, was a really old one used in college. Most of my students couldn't understand a definition, never mind the word they were looking up. I am looking for a classroom set of both the dictionaries and thesauri. At most, I will have only 13 students, yet 13 sets of books are not necessary. A set of 6 or 7 would be most useful as students could work in partners using these when we work on our language skills. This area of study is of utmost importance to my students because of their limitations, and more importantly, the use of resources such as these are engaging and fun for the kids and are highly beneficial to their education.
