Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a gifted second-grade group of students who are curious, active, smart, and delightful. Most of them are second-language learners from around the world, and they are eager to learn and do so with gusto. They love to read and to listen to stories being read to them. Their parents want the best for them, and yet often have difficulty helping their children at home due to limited or no English skills.
"It's not about teaching the child to read.
It's about teaching the children to love to read." Dr. Dahlia Hall Through my years of teaching I have learned that this quote is so true. If we are only teaching them to decode and read text, it is like taking them through a desert. What inspires and delights students are the many stories, plots, characters, and themes they read about. It allows my students, who often have no experiences outside of their neighborhood, to travel the world and beyond. Books excite their imagination and inspire them to write their own stories.
My Project
We are blessed to have many books in our classroom, but unfortunately we don't have space to store all of them. Some of the bins we have are so full that students are piling them on top instead of neatly storing them. And there are more books that need to be put out but no where to put them.
It's so important for children to be able to readily access books they're interested in.
Right now many of the bins are crammed full making it so difficult for them to peruse the shelves and find a new favorite book.
My students are avid readers, and they are always recommending books to other students and writing opinions about why a book is special. I know that they will be very grateful to be able to find the books they love, share them with friends and classmates, and store them easily when they finish reading the book.
