Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, a number of whom are English language learners, many with physical and mental health needs, and many living below the poverty line. My students face challenges daily that make it difficult to get to school, including lack of transportation, access to clean uniforms, and caring for younger siblings. All children at my school receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch daily. Despite many of the challenges they face, my students come to school filled with energy, curiosity, and the desire to succeed.
My students are resilient, strong leaders looking for opportunities to express themselves and have their voices heard.
Many of my students do not have access to supplies or technology at home as a result of financial strain so I strive to provide my students fun and unique learning opportunities that emphasize STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) collaboration, and creativity.
My Project
Many of my students are living below the poverty line and do not have access to basic care items. Good hygiene and feeling clean gives students confidence to face their peers and take on the academic challenges of the school day.
Many students miss school and avoid classes because of lack of clean uniforms, warm clothing during winter, and poor hygiene.
This project will provide warm clothing that is compliant with our schools uniform policy. Many students are out of uniform and therefore avoid class, simply because they do not have clean uniforms at home or lack funds for additional clothing items beyond the basic uniform shirt. Poor hygiene and lack of uniform can exacerbate feelings of insecurity and can affect student confidence. This project will give students access to basic needs that they do not have available at home and in turn increase student time in the classroom.
