Students in my kindergarten classroom come to school excited about learning. Most of my students come from low-income families, and all the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. This background can mean that students’ families cannot afford to purchase needed school supplies. Unfortunately, some of the students in my class are experiencing homelessness, which can mean that they lack items to meet their most basic needs.
My students deserve to receive the best education possible so that they are able to succeed in school and in life.
These boys and girls have such awesome attitudes, and they try their best every day!
My Project
My kindergarten students love animals. They love to share about their household pets or trips to the zoo. Each year, my students engage in a life cycles unit, where they learn about different animals and their life cycles. During this unit, they also learn about being compassionate and caring toward animals.
I am requesting an egg incubator, chick life cycles models, chick care items and read aloud books, so my students can have a hands-on introduction to chickens.
First, my students will learn about the life cycle of a chick and how to care for chicks by listening to me read the books that I have requested. My students will use the awesome chick life cycle models to learn how a chick developes inside an egg. Then, they will learn more about chicks and their life cycles by hatching chicks in the incubator that I have requested. Finally, the students will learn to care for the chicks by creating a safe place for the chicks, using a box, wood shavings, chicken feed and the feeder, waterer and heat lamp that I have requested. The students will be able to carefully interact with the chicks. After the chicks have been in our classroom for a few days, they will be taken to one of my coworker's aunt, who has a family farm.
