Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Can you help our class of kindergarten children? My class spends lots of time on the floor doing many activities. The carpet we currently have is old, dirty, and ugly! My students need a bright and comfortable learning place to enhance their learning and to create their personal space.

My students are from a high poverty area.

Many live in public housing and come from young, single parent families. For some, kindergarten is their first school experience and they are so excited about our classroom and all we do. Because of the minimum amount of parent involvement in their lives, they need many experiences, activities, and lots of love to help them grow and thrive. I have two special needs children, a health impaired child, and several with ADHD. They love to wiggle and move and need a rug to help them find their personal space in our room as well as create a sense of belonging and family within our classroom. A rug would help to provide structure and nurture that positive feeling about school!

My Project

Imagine a class full of precious children ready to learn but with no decent place to sit to have story time, play, build with blocks, read, talk, use manipulatives, sing, count...the list goes on and on! We will use the classroom rug as we begin each day with sharing and our calendar math activities. Our small group lessons are done on the floor. Story time, problem solving activities, group games, block building, SmartBoard lessons, and puzzles are just a few of the activities the children participate in while on the floor. We're back on the floor at the end of the day talking about what we've learned each day and singing our goodbye song. The new rug has individual squares for each child to sit and have their own space. We could do so many activities with the colored squares. The children would learn colors, positional words, ordinal numbers, add, sequence, and participate in problem-solving activities. Wow! I get excited just thinking about it all!

My students really need a rug for many activities.

This color-coded rug will provide my students with a comfortable place to sit and participate in learning. The colored grid on the rug will lead to many classroom games to reinforce learning. Children learn best when they are physically involved. The rug will help us to meet that need. The cheery atmosphere with a new rug will start each day with a smile for them and me! Happy children make great learners!
