I teach in a Title I school where 60% of our students receive free or reduced priced meals. My school is on the coast of Central North Carolina. Our town was ravaged by Hurricane Florence in early September, 2018. We were recently affected by Hurricane Dorian in September, 2019.
Due to the destruction of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Dorian, many of my students are still living in hotel rooms or temporary housing.
Their homes were severely damaged and are now no longer habitable. Several of my students are living with extended family members while their homes undergo roof repairs and renovations. Some of our families have friends and family living with them during our Florence recovery.
Our small town has been hit hard. The hardship caused by Hurricanes Florence and Dorian has caused a lack of focus and created undo stress that makes it nearly impossible to harness my children's reading abilities.
My Project
Our classroom is our home away from home. It is important for my students to have a comfortable rug as many are still living in hotel rooms due to the devastation from Hurricanes Florence and Dorian. Throughout the school year, so many memories are made from our whole group time! My students enjoy reading, listening, learning and sharing on the floor. They need a carpet to feel comfortable, especially during the winter months when our tile floor is unbearably cold.
I am asking for a new rug for my students to sit on during whole group instruction and daily read aloud.
My students will come together at the front carpet for whole group instruction, read aloud and morning message times. A whole group rug with a space for each child will foster a sense of togetherness and be a place where my students can feel cozy, warm and comfortable. It will support positive behavior choices as each student will have a designated spot on the rug.
