The students who attend our school in Lawrence are so unique. Many of them are immigrant families (first or second generation) with varying family dynamics and financial situations. My students, or as I like to call them, my kids, often come to school tired, hungry, and unable to focus. A percentage of these students are also beginning to speak, read, and write in English simultaneously. The cards are stacked against these kids but they continue to show up. They continue to smile and contribute. They continue to work. Students at our school are tenacious about a college-bound future!
My Project
Let’s face it, today’s students need different seating options. My classroom is very small. We currently have 16 desks, a table for small groups and a computer center and it still feels small. My students could use a much larger rug for aworkspace and cozying up with a good book.
While the rug itself will certainly provide a space for additional learning it will also provide my students with a home like environment.
A lot of what we do in 3rd grade is done together - a rug provides that sense of community. It brings our students together to share their ideas with one another as well as provide comfort in a home like setting.
