Snowballing The Success of Reading After The Summer Slide
My students need high-interest magazines such as Junior Scholastic and Scholastic News to engage their curiosity and help them jump successfully into the routine of reading after the possible loss of learning from the "summer slide".
The reading intervention classroom is a community for struggling students to grow into lifelong readers. Students have opportunities to accelerate to grade level expectations through personalized learning and high expectations.
In the reading intervention classroom, students strive to gain the momentum to progress rapidly toward reaching grade level expectations and beyond.
This kind of effort requires a great deal of support in any area they can find. Because of this, I am constantly looking for new ways guide them in moving toward their goals. It isn't easy to be successful, but the hard work is worth it for a lifetime!
My Project
Upon return, struggling readers sometimes need high-interest material to get them back into the routine of reading every day and I want them to have Scholastic magazines to peak their curiosity. Magazines from Scholastic provide these students with the high-interest, full-color material that is appealing and engaging so they want to read. The short features are perfect for discussion and relevant in their lives. The benefit of the subscription is having fresh material come every month so they are looking forward to what will be next. Additionally, the information they learn from these resources can aid them in other core areas such as Social Studies, Science, and Math. By submitting a project, students will have what they need to begin their journey into lifelong readers when they return from the summer break.
