Snow Pants and Boots to Keep Little Scientists Warm!
My students need snow pants and boots so I can take them outside during science class. I cannot take my 2nd and 3rd graders outside unless ALL the children have snow pants and boots.
As the science specialist for our entire school, I see all 375 students from grades PreK-5th each week. They come to my class for 45 minutes a week, and I do my best to make science fun and engaging, while helping them learn about the world around us.
My students are wonderful little people, who love to move, love attention, and do best when they are physically engaged with their learning.
Almost all of them come from economically-disadvantaged home lives, and many have grown up experiencing trauma and uncertainty. Not infrequently, their families do not have all the resources needed to provide their children with all of the essentials.
These wonderful little people need support to feel secure, and sufficient resources to help bring learning alive.
My Project
Our school has wonderful outdoor classroom with benches in the woods, an open field, a little brook, and a wetland.
I want to take my 2nd grade science students outside in the winter, but not all of them have the snow pants or boots necessary for the snow we get in New England!
Our school is lucky to have enough snowshoes for a class of students, but if my 3rd graders don't all have snow boots and pants, then they can't go outside to explore and play, and it's just not fair that some can go out but not others.
