Help me give my students a clean, germ-free working environment and full tummies! Flu season has hit, and my hygiene closet has run dry. My students need hand sanitizer, spray, and wipes to minimize the coughing and sneezing as well as snacks to fend off hunger.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a second-year teacher in Baltimore. I am teaching about 100 middle school students in my sixth, seventh and eighth grade math classes. My students come from a vibrant, resilient and hard-working Baltimore neighborhood. Many of my students have been exposed to higher levels of violence and poverty in Baltimore than your average American pre-teen. It is critical for school to be a place of refuge, friendship and personal growth as many of my students, despite being children, face very real "adult" issues.
My school focuses on supporting strong citizenship along with learning, so each of my students is on the path to craft a unique career path, be an informed consumer of the media and question status quo at large.
My goal is to show my students that math can allow them to critique and question the systems they are a part of and perhaps change or improve them.
My Project
My students can't learn if they are sick or hungry. Can you help us out?
My classroom hygiene stash has run dry, right in time for flu season and the winter blues.
I am burning cash on pumps of hand sanitizer just to keep the germs at bay, and my Clorox wipes are rapidly being depleted. I'm hoping you can help. With 40 middle schoolers in one room, things can get a little...ripe...on a normal day, but once the coughing and sneezing starts, its game over for everyone.
I am also looking for some snacks for my students. All of the students at my school are on free and reduced-price lunch, and generally that meal option is not too tasty. Come last period, I generally have a line of kids at my door asking for a snack from my lunch. Its tough on the heart to send a middle-schooler out into the snow with a hungry stomach, especially when they have to ride the city bus 90 minutes to get home. Funds for my student's snack closet would behave a great impact.
Thank you so much for reading! You make such a huge difference to my students.
